Family Giving Tree and SFP Support Students for the New School Year
In a heartwarming collaboration, Family Giving Tree donated 110 backpacks to the Salaam Food Pantry, ensuring that students within the Fremont community are equipped and ready for school this year. These backpacks, filled with essential and thoughtfully selected supplies, were distributed by age and grade to support local families as they prepare for the upcoming academic year.
Family Giving Tree is a nonprofit committed to addressing inequity in California by providing under-resourced children holiday gifts and educational supplies. This year, they worked with Salaam Food Pantry, a community staple, to ensure that children from underprivileged families could start the school year confidently.
Ashley Jacques Vestri, the Agency Coordinator for Family Giving Tree, was pivotal in making this collaboration a success. “At Family Giving Tree, we believe that every student should be able to start their school year with great-quality school items that are appropriate for each specific grade level. In doing this, our Back-to-School program allows students to focus solely on learning and supports parents by relieving the financial burden of ever-rising costs for basic school supplies and backpacks.” Vestri shared. “We are thrilled to make this important partnership with Salaam Food Pantry that made a difference to the students and families in our community."
Naseer Irfan, the founder of Salaam Food Pantry, expressed his gratitude for the support. "These backpacks brought joy to students and families," he said. "One 1st grader shouted excitedly upon discovering a water bottle, while another student’s eyes lit up at the sight of crayons, notebooks, and earbuds. The children loved picking out their backpack colors and wearing them with pride."
Many families struggle to afford the basic school necessities in today’s economy. The backpacks help alleviate parents' pressure as they balance school-related expenses with other financial needs. Irfan highlighted how much the donation means to families, especially those with multiple children. “Many families have between two and eight students. This donation is a blessing, allowing them to save money for other essentials like clothing and shoes."
As the school year begins, these donations are more than just supplies; they represent hope, dignity, and a brighter future for students who can now confidently approach the year ahead.
