Cub Scouts Pack 786 Scouting for Food

Every year, Cub Scouts across the country participate in Scouting for Food, a national service project by Scouts of America where scouts collect non-perishable goods from neighbors to support local families. This year, Cub Scout Pack 786 chose Salaam Food Pantry as their drop-off site, bringing in 400  donated non-perishable food items gathered from the Milpitas community.

On November 15th, enthusiastic Cub Scouts gathered at Salaam Food Pantry ready to spend the morning helping families in need. From the moment they walked in, the scouts got straight to work, sorting food and placing them in crates. Some checked expiration dates, ensuring that every product was safe for distribution, while others organized cans and bottles by type. The crates quickly filled with rows of beans, fruits, vegetables, tuna, and numerous other essential food items. 

As they worked, the scouts noticed which items stood out the most. Kyden Marri, a 2nd grader, focused on the nutritious items, saying the most important things were “the fruits and the vegetables.” Many others highlighted the beans among the cans, noting that because of the large quantity, they would be a key part of the donation.

Throughout the morning, the scouts also observed the impact of their work. While sorting a stack of canned beans, Sahil Rasyani, a fifth grader, explained that helping others is important because “you’re helping out the community,” a reminder of how even simple tasks can have meaningful effects. Later, other scouts discussed the larger purpose of their work. Some noted that volunteering helps families who might otherwise go without, while others emphasized that giving back strengthens the community. Zakhir Makhani, a 3rd grader summed it up simply, stating that helping matters because “some people don’t have the advantages we have, such as easy access to food, so we need to help them.”

David Solis, one of the troop leaders helping coordinate the event, was impressed by the scouts’ energy. He loved seeing them engage hands-on and learn how the food goes directly to the pantry. He highlighted how events like these help younger kids develop a sense of community and understand the importance of giving back. He noted that food donations, specifically non-perishable items, are essential for those in need and help minimize waste.

By the end of the afternoon, dozens of crates were full, and the scouts had experienced firsthand the impact of their service. Beyond the work, the day left a lasting impression, giving the scouts a sense of accomplishment and an understanding of the difference even a few hours of effort can make.

Their teamwork and dedication help ensure families in the community receive the support they need, and their service continues to inspire others to give back and make a difference in the lives of those around them.
