Equipping Students for Success: ICNA Relief + SFP Back2School Drive

On August 2nd at Irvington Masjid, the sound of laughter and children’s excitement filled the air as families lined up for this year’s Back2School Event. Partnering with ICNA Relief, Salaam Food Pantry hosted a lively two-hour event where over 200 backpacks filled with essential school supplies were distributed to students preparing for the upcoming academic year.

Each backpack was stocked with notebooks, pens, paper, and other school essentials, ensuring students from elementary through high school had the tools they needed to succeed. In addition, children received colorful teddy bears, and families enjoyed a warm meal of pizza and juice together.

For many of the volunteers, the day was about far more than distributing backpacks. Kaneez Fatima, ICNA Relief’s Event Director, explained what drives her to organize programs like this one. “My passion is to help people, and Salaam Food Pantry and ICNA Relief both give us this platform to serve Allah by serving His creation.” She described the day as full of energy, families greeting one another, children proudly showing off their new backpacks, and volunteers working side by side. “The interactions between the youth are so inspiring,” she added. “By providing students with a strong start, we’re investing in their education and in our future generations.”

For volunteer Ishaq Chatila, who has been serving with ICNA Relief for three years, the most meaningful part was simple yet profound. “Just to see everyone smile,” he said. He explained that whether it’s through a backpack, a meal, or even a teddy bear, the effort shows children and families that they are cared for, and that kindness can make a long lasting impact.

Youth volunteer Sana Zamani also found the day deeply meaningful. For her, volunteering is not only about giving back but also about growing as a person. “Helping people and meeting new people is my favorite part,” she shared. One of her favorite memories from the event was running into a former student. “He said, ‘Oh hi! I remember you,’ and it made me smile.” Sana explained that opportunities like this encourage her to continue volunteering and inspire kids to feel excited about the new school year.

The Back2School Event, made possible by Salaam Food Pantry and ICNA Relief, showed the impact that even small acts of help can have. Giving out backpacks and supplies helped students feel ready and equipped for the school year. Ready with new backpacks and a sense of confidence, they set out to make the most of the academic year.
