Making a Digital Difference
In February of 2024, Salaam Food Pantry received a donation of 42 used Dell Intel i7 laptops from Seagate for economically disadvantaged families, students pursuing online education, and individuals seeking employment. Ahmed Samiuddin, the IT Director at Seagate Technology spearheaded this initiative and shares his story.
One of Salaam Food Pantry's (SFP) outreach programs, which sources laptops for disadvantaged young high school students, sparked an idea to Mr. Sami. He approached his company proposing donating used laptops that would otherwise become electronic waste to assist local communities. But he quickly learned that most avenues were either blocked or shrouded with obstacles due to strict corporate policies, such as codes that protect against infringement and IP (intellectual property) theft.
“Every company has a product, so naturally there is wastage. It could be research, non-production devices, or equipment. Anything makes a difference for people in need. All you need is an idea and, of course, a drive to pursue it.” Countless months of advocating for change by Mr. Sami led to a successful revision of company policies, showcased by a heartwarming donation received by SFP. Beyond the immediate impact on local communities, this project is a turning point in corporate social responsibility. By challenging norms and advocating for public welfare policies, he set a precedent for other companies to follow suit. Expanding this initiative by including other tech products opens up possibilities for collaboration between the corporate and nonprofit worlds.
These laptops represent opportunity and empowerment for people facing financial hardship. In a digital age where access to technology directly influences educational and employment opportunities, Mr. Sami's initiative catalyzed meaningful change for families served by Salaam Food Pantry. It also established project management opportunities for high school students looking to build their hardware and software skills. SFP’s Youth Group worked hard to install Windows, SSD, and QC with SN control trackers. Due to high demand, all the laptops have been distributed to those in desperate need vs. electronic waste.
It's a win-win for corporations, non-profits, disadvantaged families, and high school students. One person can truly make a BIG difference. We can build off this momentum and continue creating meaningful change.
Salaam Food Pantry is truly thankful to Seagate for their collaboration in supporting the used laptops program and special thanks to Dhiren Sutaria from Seagate IT for his assistance.
